Scaly Mountain Outdoor Center is a fun place for an afternoon of family fun. In both winter and summer they feature tubing either on either artificial turf or snow. This activity is exhilirating and fun for kids young and old. During the winter you can ice skate on the ice rink. Furthermore, in summer you can mine gems and find fun natural elements. Southeastern Expeditions in Clayton is the thrill seekers destination offering whitewater rafting, kayaking and canoeing. For whitewater rafting they offer a few different packages, depending on the level of rafting and time spent you want to commit to. Andy’s Trout Farm is a fun little fishing getaway for the entire family. Here fishing is free, but you will be charged $4.90 per pound for the trout that you catch. They do not allow catch and release fishing. You can rent cane poles for $1 or bring your own gear that is appropriate for trout fishing and they will clean and prepare your fish for you for just $1. They also have a few adorable cabins for rent for the perfect fishing mountain getaway.

Foxfire Museum & Heritage Center is an educational getaway that is both interesting and fun. Here you find pioneer era cabins & farm models. The Dillard House is Dillard, Georgia’s main attractions with a hotel, horse stables, award winning restaurant, and beautiful mountain location and views. The Dillard House restaurant is well known for home town, southern cooking served family style. Their menu changes daily and includes things such as ham to fried chicken, savory collards to fried okra, and fabulous desserts. Their accommodations range from the inn to cottages and their off-site chalet village. They have plenty of activities on-site including horseback riding, a petting zoo, pool and jacuzzi and a full-service restaurant.

Valley Café is known for its southern breakfast and home town cooking. They are located just off the main road in Dillard and have great biscuits for breakfast. With a drive-through, you can call ahead and run through to grab yourself a quick, flavorful breakfast. A local favorite, the spinach and artichoke dip has great reviews as well as many of the other menu items.

La Cabana Mexican Restaurant has been family owned for over 20 years. When you’re looking for anything but southern cooking, La Cabana is a great place to hit the spot. Serving both lunch and dinner, the menu ranges from inventive dishes, such as the Lobster Picatta, to traditional favorites like Coq au Vin. Fortify π offers an array of Italian favorites and pizzas made with fresh, local ingredients. Their pizzas are baked in a brick oven. Including a full bar and hand-crafted cocktails, Fortify is a great place for dining lovers and foodies to enjoy an inventive dinner experience.

The Wicked Pig BBQ is a family owned and operated business in Downtown Clayton. They offer all types of BBQ from brisket to pulled chicken. Wolfgang’s Restaurant and Wine Bistro is headed by Wolfgang Green. With a history that has taken him around the globe, including Commander’s Palace, Wolfgang’s is his culinary success planted in the small town of Highlands. Its cozy outdoor seating and comfortable indoor atmosphere, it is a great place for family and friends to gather for a fabulous fine dining experience. Reservations are recommended.

Madison’s is the home of local cuisine. This restaurant boasts the stamp of approval when it comes to farm fresh food. Located at the gorgeous Old Edwards Inn, you can dine indoors year-round. Additionally, outdoor dining is available seasonally in the Wine Garden. This seating offers cool mountain weather and waterfall views.

The Ugly Dog Pub is a great spot to grab a beer and bite to eat in a casual, fun atmosphere. They have feature nights including Trivia Tuesday and Bluegrass Music Wednesdays. Furthermore, they feature local bands on the weekends. Their menu features bar favorites and local cuisine and does not disappoint.

Sweetreats is an Ice Cream Shop & Deli in Highlands. This small deli has fantastic sandwiches that families look forward to coming back to. They also feature craft ice cream and to die for milkshakes. Prepare to wait for a table or take your sandwich to go, as seating is limited. With that said, the sandwiches are worth it.    

Natural Attractions – Waterfalls & Swimming Holes

There are tons of Waterfalls near Dillard. You can also take a piece of Bartram Trail, not far from Dillard. You can view the beautiful Becky Branch Falls, as well as Dick Creek Falls on this trail. Visit Ammons Creek Falls for a unique look at the entire waterfall system. In addition, you can view the 120-foot Holcomb Creek Falls on this hike. 

Visit Martin Creek Falls for an easy view of a cute waterfall with a a short .5 mile walk,. Angel Falls Trail at Lake Rabun Beach is a 2 mile hike where you can enjoy two waterfalls, Angel Falls and Panther Falls. You can also head on to Warwoman Dell if you want to continue. This historical trail which will take you through some of the highlights of the park.

Swimming Holes and Sliding Rocks are always fun day trips in the mountains. Slippery sliding rocks are great for kids. Secret Falls is a remote waterfall and swimming hole near Highlands. It is located deep in the forest. 

However, it is easily located on a easy hiking trail. Bust Your Butt Falls is known for its name. This popular swimming hole and sliding area are located just off the highway. For daredevils, there is a “jump off” rock to dive into the waters. Closer to Cashiers, just a short walk will bring you to Silver Run Falls where there is a beautiful waterfall & swimming spot.

Natural Attractions – National & State Parks

Sunset Rock & Ravenel Park is a romantic spot with gorgeous views! There are beautiful sunset views of downtown Highlands. You can take a picnic and some wine and enjoy a romantic evening. The park offers great bird watching with an info kiosk. Visit their website for more information.

Black Rock Mountain State Park is Georgia’s highest state park. For outdoor activities in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Black Rock Mountain provides the most outstanding backdrop. With four hiking trails you can see a little bit of everything; forests, streams, waterfalls, wildflowers, and beautiful wildlife. Additionally, camping is available at the state park for both RVs and tents. Also, the Visitors Center offers spectacular views, a picnic area, and a small gift shop.

Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest is a great place to enjoy outdoor activities and recreational opportunities. The Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest is full of outdoor activities with almost 900,000 acres of coverage. There are hundreds of miles of recreational trails and hiking, a plethora of streams and waterfalls, and plenty of picnic areas. Also, there are tons of camping locations and other recreational opportunities throughout the park. The Interactive Maps  provided by the USDA is a great guide to start planning a trip.

Wineries & Distilleries – Dillard & Clayton Ga

12 Spies Vineyards is a wonderful spot to enjoy your afternoon and taste local wine. Their tasting room offers beautiful views and gorgeous sunsets. It is nestled between the mountains and Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest,. You can enjoy a glass of wine on their porch and listen to live music (when available). Also, you can explore their beautiful flower gardens. 12 Spies offers a variety of  sweet to dry wines, perfect for all wine lovers.

Nobel Wine Cellars is a local winemaker with a chic wine tasting room in downtown Clayton. The Nobel Wine Cellars Tasting Room also provide previews of other products made in the state of Georgia and local art. Not your average tasting room, Nobel Wine Cellars are currently previewing 3 variations: Traminette, Petit Manseng, and Chambourcin. Their offering provides the perfect chance to keep it local and try something new!

Moonrise Distillery provides a unique look in the distilling process. Located just off the main highway heading into Clayton, this small down distillery is anything but small town. They love to share their knowledge of the distilling process used to make their North Georgia whiskey and are very knowledgeable and friendly. Festivals – Surrounding Areas

Bluegrass and Barbeque Festival encompasses a few mountain traditions in North Georgia in one place. Held every year, this home town festival features local bluegrass bands and plenty of barbeque. There are activities for everyone from crafts for children to cooking classes for adults. Well behaved dogs are allowed, so bring the whole family and enjoy food, fun, and music!

Celebrate Clayton is an annual Arts and Fine Crafts festival that is held every spring in downtown Clayton. With displays of local art and crafts, this festival is perfect for both children and adults. This festival features local food vendors, a kid’s activity area, and musical entertainment. The Celebrate Clayton festival is a great way to immerse yourself in the arts of the City of Clayton and enjoy the beautiful spring weather.

Highlands Food & Wine Festival is held in the fall of every year. This festival is a great time to try local food and drink. Enjoy time with friends and family as you taste exquisite small plates and try spirits and wines. This event fills up quickly, so get tickets early!

Highlands Motoring Festival  is held every June in the lovely summer weather. At this festival you can view cars new and old, domestic and foreign. This is more than a car show, but also a great experience in the beautiful town of highlands.
