BRIEF HISTORY OF TAMPA, FL
In 1513, Ponce de Leon arrives in Tampa to focus on settling in eastern Florida. After becoming part of the United States in 1845, further development of the Tampa Bay region began and in 1884 expanded quickly with the addition of the railroad extension to the Hillsborough River. With access to the Tampa Bay, Hillsborough River and railroad, commercial success found Tampa and steadily grew.
The military has played in huge role in Tampa’s development and is home to the U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command headquarters at MacDill Air Force Base. Tampa is now home to a beautiful Riverwalk, booming business district, and offers a diverse, multi-cultural home in the heart of Florida.
